Éliane's Journey: Women in Basketball

Éliane's Journey: Women in Basketball is a project aiming to protect, celebrate, and elevate the rich cultural heritage of the women's game.

The roots of this project lie in the remarkable journey of Éliane Girod, a Swiss trailblazer who took part in the first FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in 1953. When her World Cup diary and her personal basketball memorabilia were donated to the FIBA Museum, the vivid detail of her notes sparked the desire to explore how women in the sport have influenced societies for more than seven decades.

The initiative, built on the Foundation's mission to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of basketball, celebrates the cultural, social, and historical legacy of women in basketball. It highlights the stories, voices, and experiences that shaped the women’s game and explores its impact on society.

In the coming months leading up to the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026, this space will continue to expand, with additional publications, open archive materials, interviews, and articles that will progressively be made available to enrich the historical record.
