Women in Basketball Legacy is a project aiming to protect, celebrate, and elevate the rich cultural heritage of the women's game.
The roots of this project lie in the remarkable journey of Éliane Girod, a Swiss trailblazer who took part in the first FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in 1953. When her World Cup diary and her personal basketball memorabilia were donated to the FIBA Museum, the vivid detail of her notes sparked the desire to explore how women in the sport have influenced societies for more than seven decades.
The initiative, built on the Foundation's mission to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of basketball, celebrates the cultural, social, and historical legacy of women in basketball. By bringing to light the stories, voices, and experiences that shaped the game, it reinforces FIBA's commitment to advancing women in basketball while honoring those whose achievements helped transform the sport and society.
